Potassium Thiocyanate is a chemical used to enhance iron-rich dust or soil impressions. Many footwear impressions found at crime scenes are faint and reveal little detail for comparison or evaluation. In many cases, chemical enhancement of these impressions can assist in obtaining usable evidence suitable for a more detailed comparison. A wide range of chemical enhancement techniques are available. Choosing the proper enhancement method generally depends on the composition of the residue, dust, or soil that make up the impressions.
