Space Dust

Many instructors would like to include field testing of a suspected drug material during student processing of simulated crime scenes. A student field testing unit includes a bottle of a simulated drug material called Space Dust, a sample of a non-reactive powder to provide a negative sample, and two field “drug” test kits similar to those used by the police. The Space Dust sample or the negative sample can be spread as a powder on the scene, repackaged into small baggies, or placed as a residue on paraphernalia items such as spoons or pipes. This will allow the opportunity for students to find the suspected drug, perform a presumptive field test using standard procedures, package evidence items for submission to the laboratory, and include the results of testing in their crime scene report.
