BlueClue is a presumptive test for gunpowder particles.

BlueClue is a preliminary and presumptive test which is commonly used in the field or at a crime scene for the detection of gunpowder particles and is used primarily to establish probable cause for arrest or a search warrant. It can be used to sample the hands of a suspected shooter, the hands of the victim in suspected suicide cases, or persons suspected of handling explosive materials. The test is based upon the chemical detection of nitrates which are found in burned and partially burned gunpowder particles. The particles are discharged from the muzzle of the weapon during firing. Additionally, they are discharged from the barrel-cylinder gap in revolvers and from the slide opening during semiautomatic firing. The kit provides an adhesive pad used in collecting these particles which may be deposited on the shooters’ hands, clothing, or adjacent environmental surfaces. The pad is returned to the plastic pouch of the kit and the enclosed glass tube is broken which allows a chemical reagent to be spread upon the collection pad. A chemical reaction takes place between the nitrates in the gunpowder particles and the chemical reagent which results in deep blue color specks or smears. Additional collection for further testing for gunshot or primer residue by SEM can also be conducted. By utilizing the BlueClue test, preliminary results can be obtained in the field within minutes to establish probable cause and either eliminate or include suspects.
